I advocate prevention more than I ever did before. It takes more of my time professionally to discuss and educate patients about prevention but I think in the long run it pays off. I see patients mostly who are healthy and who pay me to stay healthy.
I no longer accept “health insurance” as payment because insurance doesn’t pay enough for the time it takes to educate patients about health.
I want to share with you some interesting statistics about prevention of chronic disease and give you my top 4 interventions that really make a difference. Also I want to share my commonest educational pearls related to THE most health-boosting recommendation.
Here are the 4 healthiest lifestyle factors for prevention of chronic disease:
1) Never Smoke — if you smoke now — STOP
2) Get to your ideal body weight
3) Exercise — get at least 3.5 hours weekly of physical activity
4) MOST IMPORTANT = Healthy Diet
If the above 4 lifestyle factors are followed, disease risk falls. Here are some great examples:
78% decrease risk of Chronic Disease
81% decrease risk of Heart Attack
50% decrease risk of Stroke
36% decrease risk of Cancer
93% decrease risk of Diabetes
I commonly tell patients that of all the lifestyle factors listed above, one is THE best to improve health — so I say, “nothing, nothing, nothing will improve your health more than what you choose to put at the end of your fork.” If you want more information related to this bold statement, I suggest you watch three documentaries — “Forks Over Knives”, “Eating You Alive” and “What The Health”. So with that being said, here are other statements that I use to try to influence patients to adopt healthy eating habits:
Meat IS the “new tobacco”
Meat causes inflammation
Dairy IS “liquid meat”
Fiber is very important — Fiber is the new protein.
Get over 40 grams of fiber in your diet daily. (The average vegetarian gets only 25 grams)
Eat the healthiest food on planet earth, #1 is Vegetables, # 3 is Fruits and #5 is Beans, Peas, Legumes and Lentils
Oil is the LEAST healthy “food” on the planet
Avoid ALL Animal products (Meat, Fish, Chicken, Dairy and Eggs)
Animal protein wears out your kidneys
High protein intake (especially from animals) turns on cancer genes
Plant protein is the healthiest form of protein
Fish and Eggs increase your risk for diabetes
Chicken is one of the least healthy food sources and causes cancer
When you know better, you do better and now that I have done the research into health and prevention of disease and know how to advise patients, I feel like I am truly making a difference fighting disease and promoting overall health.
Eat a plant-based, whole food diet which consists of the most nutrient-dense food with associated lower calories. Avoid and/or eliminate sugar, refined carbohydrates, oil and salt.
