Just a month ago, Braylynn Lawhon of Gulf Breeze, Florida, was a seemingly healthy little girl, excitedly preparing to celebrate her 5th birthday. Doctors now say she could die at any moment.

The girl was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, a deadly form of brain cancer.

Braylynn’s mother, Ally Parker, has been posting updates on her daughter’s condition on Facebook.

She recently shared an image that captures the brutality of cancer: Braylynn’s grandfather, 49-year-old Sean Peterson, who suffers from ALS, overwhelmed by sadness as he visited his sick granddaughter.

“They wheeled him in to see Braylynn. He can no longer speak, he can’t move his hands and he has a feeding tube,” Beth Peterson-Hickman, Braylynn’s grandmother and Peterson’s ex-wife, told PEOPLE. “When he saw her, he was crying and it was heart-wrenching. I broke down and I had to turn around.”

The image has gone viral and has been shared nearly 5,000 times.

A GoFundMe account has been created for Braylynn’s medical expenses. Ally Parker shares updates on Braylynn’s condition on Braylynn’s Battalion Facebook page.
